Materials we use

Belgard and Keystone pavers for patios, walkways, borders and accent areas. Austin chopped stone for flowerbed borders, retaining walls and accent borders. Polymeric sand, compacted base material.

How it works

    Confirm and sign off on final design

    You approve the layout, material and pattern before any work begins.

    Define the area and call 811

    We mark out the footprint and have underground utilities located before breaking ground.

  3. 3

    Excavate 6-8 inches to sub-soil

    Reaching stable sub-soil is what prevents settling later. Shortcuts here are why patios fail.

    Compact the subsoil

    The exposed subsoil is compacted to create a stable foundation.

  5. 5

    Install paver base in two lifts

    Base material goes in and is compacted in two separate lifts rather than one deep pour, which compacts far more evenly.

    Install one inch of leveling sand

    A screeded sand layer gives a precise setting bed for the pavers.

  7. 7

    Install edge restraint

    Edge restraint locks the perimeter so pavers cannot creep outward over time.

  8. 8

    Lay pavers and make cuts

    Pavers are set in the approved pattern with clean cuts at all edges and curves.

  9. 9

    Install polymeric sand and activate

    Polymeric sand is swept into the joints and sprayed with water to harden, locking the surface and resisting weeds and washout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a paver patio last?
A properly based paver patio lasts decades. Individual pavers can also be lifted and reset if a repair is ever needed, which is a real advantage over poured concrete that has to be broken out.
Why do some paver patios sink?
Almost always an inadequate base. If the installer did not excavate to stable sub-soil or compacted the base in one deep lift instead of two, the material continues settling under load. That is why our process specifies both.
Do pavers get slippery or grow weeds?
Weeds grow in joints when loose sand is used. Polymeric sand hardens and greatly reduces both weed growth and washout.
